Folsom Educational Foundation –
September 10, 2007
Members
present:
Jean Rishel, Danyele Passalaqua, MaryBeth Spiegel, Rita
Howell, Joanne Wiessner, Dina Abbamondi, Kacey Storey,
Patricia Arena and Sue Chille.
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM.
Rita
motioned to approve the minutes from the June 4, 2007
meeting and MaryBeth seconded the motion.
Financial
Report:
MaryBeth
reviewed the financial status of the Foundation. Since
the last meeting, the Foundation has paid the balance of
the 2nd Grade Ocean Life balance, the Field Day
donation, the Hammonton News bill for the Referendum
advertisement, the 10% deposit of the Primary Focus
assembly, and the bills to the Folsom BOE for school trip
buses. To date, the Total Commerce Funds available are
$2,013.04. The Bank of America (MBNA) funds are
$24,517.96 and the Folsom Hunting and Fishing Scholarship
amount is $3,705.38. At the June 4th meeting,
the Foundation learned that a $50 donation was given to
the Foundation in memory of Alexa Quinto. Because the
check was written to the Folsom school district, it was
given to the Folsom BOE. Then the BOE issued the
Foundation a $50 check for deposit. This $50 will go
towards an Art project. Joanne motioned to approve the
financial report and Jean seconded the motion.
Old
Business:
Assembly:
Danyele confirmed the Primary Focus Assembly and Character
Education activities are scheduled for October 15, 2007.
The full day program will cost $1,300 and the deposit of
$130 was mailed to the organization on June 13, 2007. A
program description was provided that will offer two
45-minute assemblies, classroom workshops, and
lunch/recess conversations for students in Grades K-6.
Danyele will confirm the set-up needs for the assembly in
order to make seating arrangements. A tentative assembly
schedule is Grade 4-6 students will view the show at 9 AM
and Kindergarten-Grade 3 students will view the program at
10 AM. Danyele also shared a DVD of the program.
Thank
Yous:
The Foundation received a thank you from BrieAnn Gross,
the 2007 recipient of the Hunting and Fishing Award.
Also, Ms. DeSordi sent a thank you for our donation to the
Field Day activities.
True
Friend of Education:
Ms. Elizabeth Maxwell was awarded the 2007 Folsom True
Friend of Education Award. As an alumnus, Elizabeth has
generously sent donations to the Foundation. As a friend
and former teacher, MaryBeth spoke on behalf of the
Foundation at the awards ceremony thanking Elizabeth for
her contributions.
New
Business:
Teacher
Grants:
Mrs. Lewis, the art teacher, submitted a teacher grant in
the Spring of 2007 asking for assistance in purchasing a
paper cutter for the Art room. The grants committee
approved the grant on June 18, 2007 for the amount of
$150, a portion of which was supported with the $50
donation in honor of Alexa Quinto.
Ms.
Abbamondi submitted a grant in the amount of $521, called
“FTN Builds Character.” This grant would support a
school-wide character education campaign through the
morning announcements provided by FTN. The committee
members discussed the program. Danyele made a motion to
approve the grant and Joanne seconded the motion.
Logo
Contest:
As
discussed last fall, the Foundation will be purchasing a
baseball sign for the baseball field. Before doing so,
the Foundation will hold a logo contest for students in
Grades 3-8 to create a Foundation seal that represents our
ideals. A contest letter with the criteria and logo
dimensions will be created by Dina, Danyele and Kacey.
The criteria will also be reviewed by Mrs. Lewis, our Art
teacher. It was suggested to have the contest announced
during art class and the homeroom with the winning
submission will earn a classroom mini-grant for teacher
supplies. The contest will be held this Fall.
Fundraising:
The
Foundation would like to hold Gift Card sales during the
holidays. The premise is individuals can buy gift cards
and a certain percentage of the cost will be given to the
Foundation. Trish and Linda Carty will look into “GL
Script” for more information. If we run the program next
year, it was suggested to only offer it to teachers, staff
and Foundation members until we are comfortable organizing
the program.
A Comedy
Night committee will be formed. The tentative date is
Saturday, January 26, 2008. To encourage more school
involvement, it was suggested to have each homeroom be
responsible for supplying items for a theme basket. These
theme baskets (movie basket, kitchen basket, gardening,
etc.) will be raffled off at the show. The Foundation
will still seek donations for food, drinks, and possible
door prizes. It was suggested to offer incentives to
students/classes who have sold the most tickets. The
Comedy Night Committee will decide if Comedy Blast or
another company such as the Comedy Hypnosis Act will be
used.
Membership:
Back to
School Night is Thursday, September 20, 2007 at 7 PM. In
an effort to recruit more parent and community members,

posted on the website and in the main office. Meetings
will continue to be listed on the monthly calendar that is
sent home with students.
